Clarification on how Ship&co calculates total shipment weight for rate estimation
I’d like to clarify how Ship&co calculates the total shipment weight when providing shipping rate estimates at Shopify checkout.
From what I understand, Shopify always uses the default package (set in “Settings → Shipping and delivery → Packages”) when sending rate requests — even if an order contains multiple products.
For example, suppose my Shopify default package is 3 kg, but the order only contains three products with actual weights of 100 g, 200 g, and 300 g (total = 0.6 kg). In that case, the weight and size of the default package can differ significantly from the real shipment.
Could you please confirm whether Ship&co calculates the rate based on:
- the total weight of all individual products from Shopify, or
-
the package weight and dimensions information that Shopify includes in the rate request (i.e. the default package)?
I’d like to understand which data source Ship&co relies on to determine the final shipping rate shown at checkout.
Thank you very much for your time and support!

Hi Hien Nguyen
Thank you for reaching out.
I need to clarify an important point: Ship&co does not provide shipping rate estimates at Shopify checkout. Ship&co has no functionality that displays rates or calculates shipping costs on your store's checkout page.
Ship&co is a post-purchase shipping management system. This means:- Customers complete their purchase on your Shopify store using whatever shipping rates you've configured in Shopify (flat rates, carrier-calculated rates via Shopify Shipping, or third-party shipping apps)
- After the order is placed, it syncs to Ship&co
- You can then view carrier rates within Ship&co's order management interface and create shipping labels
Please let me know if you have any questions about how Ship&co works for post-purchase shipping management.
