How to Fix the FedEx Error: "Total commodities weight is greater than package or shipment weight"

When creating FedEx international shipments in Ship&co, you may encounter the following error:

Error: COMMODITYWEIGHT.GREATERTHAN.PACKAGEWEIGHT
Total commodities weight is greater than the package weight. Please check each commodities weight entered.

This FedEx error occurs when the combined item weight (synced automatically from your e-commerce store, such as Shopify) exceeds the total package weight you entered in Ship&co.

Why this happens

FedEx requires the declared total shipment weight (total parcel weight) to be equal to or greater than the total weight of all items (commodities) in the shipment.

Ship&co automatically syncs item weights from your online store. If you later modify the product weight in your e-commerce platform after the order is paid, these changes will not be reflected in Ship&co due to limitations in order sync timing.

How to resolve the error

If you can't increase the total parcel weight to match the total item weight, please try the following workaround: 

1. In the "Ordered items" section of the Ship&co order screen, click the red trash can icon to the right of the listed product to delete it. (Tip: You may want to copy the product name and unit price before deleting.)

2. Click "+ Add" in the "Ordered items" section, then manually enter the details for the product you deleted in step 1, and click "Submit"

By performing these steps, you can decouple the weight data from the product data, helping to avoid errors when creating FedEx shipping labels. In most cases, this will not affect the automatic fulfillment update to Shopify after label creation.

Please Note: Ship&co offers an order duplication feature. However, if the original order contains product weight data, any duplicated order will also include that weight data. Therefore, we recommend not using the duplication feature in this situation.

Best practice to prevent future errors

• Ensure all product weights are accurate and up to date in your store’s product settings.
• Double-check package weight in Ship&co is greater than or equal to total item weight.
